See, it’s
heartbreakingfunny because Mike was always far more trusting than he ought to be. And because Harvey doles out trust just about as often as he throws in the towel on a case.And everything about them just stretches all of Harvey’s rules to the limit and beyond, because with Mike, there was no consideration; there was no quid pro quo. Unlike with Jessica and Donna, it wasn’t slow-building; it didn’t even have a strong foundation. There was a bizarre and inexplicable leap of faith, there was spark of recognition of a mind with lateral thinking abilities up the wazoo, there was a kid who just wouldn’t let him down, and there was a partnership that I don’t think Harvey or Mike understand one bit.
They don’t even try to define boundaries—something Harvey certainly excelled at in his personal life with both Zoe and Scotty. They just keep pushing each other and demanding everything all the time, and simply expecting that the other will understand that—yeah, this is a weird day for me and I’m just here chilling and taking a train, go be awesome in my stead; that yeah, I want you to use everything you’ve learned about me to destroy me in front of the whole firm, and we’ll still be okay, because there’s no one else I trust more to press until it hurts; that yeah, there’s Donna and she’s possibly the most important person in my life, but I still expect you to push her or bypass her entirely because you’re mine and that overrides everything else.
I doubt Harvey would let himself fall in love with someone he doesn’t trust; and hearing “I trust you” from Harvey means worlds more than any old “I love you” ever could.
